and we just love you, amen amen ok, nobody follow amen you have to say amen ok, amen is Portuguese alright Spanish, maybe don't talk Spanish ok here we go tonight we're going to talk about truth we've been focused a lot on truth truth this, truth that who remembers last week, what was last week what did we talk about last week we talked about, I don't even remember what did we talk about last week right and wrong ok, good Alexa's paying attention we're going to talk about truth or reality is there a difference is there a difference between what's true and what's real or is what's true the same as what's real and what's real
the same as what's true understand the whole thing let me turn down everything over here so we don't give me funky feedback here alright what's the difference help me out here what's truth tell me what's truth what is truth who knows give me a definition what is truth can somebody tell me does anybody know what is truth if someone comes up to you on the street and they don't know Jesus and they say what is truth you're a Christian you say that truth is absolute so what is it huh you can say it in Portuguese uh-huh o que é verdade como a gente define a verdade porque todo mundo fala eu tenho a verdade eu sei a verdade
mas quando você pega alguém e coloca ele na parede e fala cara então me fala o que é verdade ninguém sabe explicar oh well it's um it's kind of like this it's um you know it's um well it's it's the truth e you didn't say anything we say we know the truth but we can't tell people what the truth is the truth is something that's absolute it doesn't change ever truth is not relative truth can't be relative and still be truth the moment that truth becomes relative it's not truth it's opinion truth doesn't change one plus one is two forever one plus one will never be three it'll always be two that's the truth so we're gonna talk
about time we've already talked about truth a little bit well the first week but what I want to talk about tonight is what's the difference between truth and reality because a lot of times we use truth and reality verdade e realidade verdade e real like the same thing like we can change them that's true that's real that's real that's true essa é real essa é verdade essa é verdade é real como se fosse algo que pode ser trocado qualquer hora mas não truth is different from reality and that's what we want to talk about tonight why why because the world tries to make reality truth and they try to say truth is an absolute
because it can change because my reality changed but that's not true so the point tonight is truth and reality are not the same eles não são a mesma coisa realidade e verdade são diferentes a gente vai agora entender por que let's start with the truth um i'm gonna make a statement you tell me if it's true or not i am green and i am more than three meters tall is that true or no it's not why not i'm not green who says so what if truth is relative what if you think this is white but i think it's green what if i think that chair is green what if my truth a mini verdade e que essa cadera a verdade who are you to tell me
that i'm wrong isn't that what the world says the world tries to tell us that everybody can have their own truth like we talked about last week everybody can have their own knowledge no you can't there is white there's only one white that's white i'm well depends i'm kind of blue kind of red now now i'm green depends on what light i'm behind but it's not true that i'm more than three meters tall and green i'm white and i'm not even two meters tall almost one plus one can never be three white can never be green and doesn't matter what you think because truth doesn't change even though we want to say that truth can change
it doesn't and it can't change truth has to be absolute for it to be true truth can't be based on opinions we can't say well i think i think that chair is orange and i think that god is purple and well you can think whatever you want but just because you think something doesn't make it true i mean so much because you think something do you can think totally wrong i used words in portugues sometimes in the beginning i thought i was using the right i thought i said the truth i said i used a wrong wrong wrong but i didn't know i used the right word i can say that in the pulpit because it means this no it doesn't mean
that it means this oh whoops so my truth was wrong truth can't be relative and still be truth it has to be absolute so why is truth important why why is truth important to us because if it's not truth it's a lie there's no middle it's true or it's a lie it's truth or it's a lie if you don't tell the truth what if Elias comes and tells us that he just won the mega cena is that true no and so what is he doing he's lying it's a lie and you're a liar no eh if you come and you tell me Jordan now Jordan has this new thing Jordan he crosses his fingers when he says something because it doesn't count and so I talked to him
I said no Jordan even if you you can have your legs crossed and your hair crossed and your eyes crossed and your fingers crossed it's still a lie if it's not the truth it's a lie and if you don't believe the truth you're believing a lie if you believe that's green it's a lie and you're believing a lie so what we're going to get that's that's truth we understand what truth is right real quick truth is quickly it's the short version now we're going to talk about reality and why reality isn't always truth and why truth isn't always reality why they're different sometimes you can use them the same but they're different
because reality in everyday usage the way that we use the word reality is it means the state of things as they actually exist but we know that things can change that chair if i paint that chair green next week the chair is going to be green and then the chair is green i change the reality of the chair i can change that i can't change white to white somehow mean green but i can change the reality of the chair i can make the chair green who how many do you guys have dreams you dream you say they have dreams who has been a dream that dream was so real you woke up and went oh my goodness it was like so real i could taste the chocolate i could see the ocean i was i was flying but it was so real but was it true no
and it wasn't real it just felt like it was real sometimes our feelings we can feel real but our feelings sometimes are wrong too it felt real but it wasn't real reality can change truth cannot change truth cannot change reality can change but reality isn't subjective reality like truth truth is not subjective truth doesn't depend on your opinion and neither does reality reality is not subjective it is or it isn't you can't sit now but my have you heard someone say my reality a minya helidaji ah que bestia it is stupid it doesn't it doesn't make sense people are so smart they are dumb they try and switch they say no but my reality
well your reality if something is real this this is reality and you can't change reality doesn't matter what you think or what you feel it is not subjective it is objective so reality is always real although everyone will always have their perception you know what perception is percepção como se percebe now your perception reality exists it's not subjective but how I see it might be different than how you see it my opinion of reality the reality doesn't change for well it's like put it this way a car wreck you ever seen a car accident if you get seven people seven different people who saw the car accident and ask them
what happened everybody will tell you something different because they all saw it differently well it was his fault no it was her fault no it was this bird that came down from the sky and almost ran into the car and he swerved his car and she swerved hers to not hit the dog and they ran into each other but there was an accident the reality is that two cars ran into each other seven people saw the same accident seven people saw the accident different so while reality is not subjective it can be perceived percebido diferente o acidente foi o acidente todo mundo percebeu de uma maneira diferente that's why we have what we call
reality and perceived reality have you heard that term realidade e realidade percebida that's um philosophical term I'm being philosophical today and so in philosophy they talk about reality and perceived reality and so what we're trying to do is show here's a good example of perceived reality have you ever seen a newborn baby a little baby after he was born um renascido um baby renascido talvez um dia não nem isso seis horas já viu alguém renascido have you seen one a little baby here's my question don't lie nobody can lie okay because this is a church and if you lie God will kill you are newborn babies beautiful
no no yours wasn't either that's a lie no newborn baby is beautiful they're ugly they're ugly they're all they're all slimy and they're all wrinkly and their heads because their heads come out a hole this big their head looks like a cone head and the head's like stuck up a little bit and you look at the baby and it's going and people come in and they go oh what a beautiful baby what a lie that's a lie because the baby's not beautiful it's ugly it's ugly but you can't tell the mom your baby is ugly se você fala para uma mãe que o bebê dela recém-nascido é feio ou feio oh meu porque a realidade percebida ou perceived
reality of the mother the baby is beautiful but for the rest of us who aren't blind we look at it we go I'm sorry but your baby is really ugly he'll get prettier you know he'll get he'll get nicer looking but right now yuck it's funny how you see perceived if you talk to Jordan talk to my son about soccer futsal ask him if he's good ask him if he's good and he will tell you that he is the best soccer player in all of Brazil he'll tell you and don't argue with him because he knows he's the best se você tenta discutir que ele não é o melhor jogador de futebol no Brasil ele não vai te dar e te dar ouvido porque o meu filho
sabe que ele é perceived reality that's perceived he perceives that he's the best but he's not but don't try to tell him the reality is he plays soccer but he's not the best so or how about anorexia you know what anorexia is anorexia you know the girls are like just bones and skin and almost dying they look in a mirror and what do they see they look in the mirror and they go oh I'm so fat and the rest of us are looking at him going but you're not fat you're really skinny no oh my I have to lose weight I'm so fat I have to go on a diet it's like if they're gonna lose weight the only way they're gonna lose weight is if they like
cut off an arm because there's no way to lose any more weight there's no fat no one with anorexia the only way to lose weight is to lose weight and to lose weight and to lose weight but there's no way there's no weight there's no weight but when they look in the mirror they see somebody fat and they see somebody ugly and they don't like what they see so reality is always true but sometimes the way we perceive reality our opinion of reality isn't always true we can be wrong we can be wrong it can be our reality but it can still be wrong reality can change your reality can change is anybody poor anybody alguém aqui pobre
no ninguém fala sua realidade pode mudar if Elias shares the mega center with you you can be rich like Elias right we can we can be poor today and be rich tomorrow we can be fat today and skinny tomorrow we can be skinny today and fat tomorrow we can be an ugly little baby today and be a beautiful girl someday just you know don't ask Alex because his baby was beautiful when it came out but yes yeah right exactly we won't say what that is okay reality reflects the varying conditions and circumstances that characterize our world let's see a realidade reflete ne a nosso mundo como que é as circunstâncias as mudanças que vem todo dia
reality is always changing Brazil 50 years ago was a military government today it's a democracy or it's a republic so it's changed the reality of what it was to be a Christian 50 years ago in Brazil was hard now it's easy everybody's a Christian sure truth on the other hand like we've been saying truth is objective truth doesn't change truth isn't dependent on anything around it reality can change by like right now we have all of us here and everybody leaves the church is full and everybody leaves the church is empty and everybody comes back and the church is full and everyone leaves the church empty and it keeps changing
the reality but the fact that this is a church doesn't change it's still a church and it doesn't matter if one person's here or 500 of course if 500 people were here we probably wouldn't be breathing very well but the truth doesn't change it's objective it's eternal and it's absolute where reality is objective it's not eternal because it can change and it's also absolute because it's not based on opinions it's based on that's what it is but it can change did you ever see the movie The Truman Show The Truman Show I don't know how to speak in Portuguese of Truman I've seen that film it's a good it's a good film there's nothing
there's no yucky stuff there's nothing bad in it but it's what's the guy's name Kerry Jim Kerry I don't like him I personally don't like the guy most of his movies are garbage most of his movies are you can put them in a toilet and you just pull the cord because he's filthy he's got a bad mouth he talks about dirty stuff bad stuff but this movie The Truman Show is a good movie and he's the guy but what it is who's seen it have you seen it who hasn't seen it if you see it they've made this world he was born into a TV program and he's the star but he doesn't know it so for 30 years all the cameras are on him watching him
grow up and the whole world is watching him live in what's a world that was created from a studio and he's living there and the whole world is watching him grow up and how he likes a girl or how he falls on his bike and everything how he gets a job and they're all watching his reality was that world everything he knew was that his perceived reality but the truth is that it was a TV show and everybody else in the show were actors and actresses he was the only person real in it it's a great it's a great movie if you want to see the difference between reality perceived reality and truth because it's all mixed in and it's really
it's really it's creative it's a good it's a neat movie it's really creative in how they did it but if you haven't seen maybe we should watch it some Saturday maybe maybe next Saturday are you guys going to come next Saturday next Saturday you're going to be here because maybe it's a good it's a good to watch a movie and then talk about the movie because it brings a reality that we're talking about it but afterwards we'll talk about it in English we're going to talk about Portuguese and we're not going to watch Dublado no Dublado Dublado is of the devil I don't like Dublado Dublado I like Legendado it's hard the guy
the guy's mouth goes hi benvindo no I like I like to see the lips move with the words so you can read the no actually you shouldn't because you're trying to learn English you should just listen don't sit there and read the whole thing try and try and hear it but next week we'll watch we'll make some popcorn and we'll have a movie night we'll watch the Truman show oh hey anyways the difference between truth and reality here's what we're getting truth and reality truth the bible says the truth can set you free you heard that verse in in john 8 31 32 the truth will set you free the truth will sanctify you by in john 17
17 19 it will also purify you in 1st peter 1 22 but reality cannot set you free reality cannot sanctify you and reality cannot purify you reality is limited the truth can because the truth doesn't change the truth can set you free because the truth is a fixed thing it's absolute but reality can't how can reality change you when reality itself is always changing now truth is found throughout scripture gives us a reliable set of unwavering or unchanging parameters to live by like we talked about last week right and wrong what's the difference between right and wrong and that's things that God's given us his laws God's put in us
things that we know it's wrong to kill you don't have to tell your kids you don't have to say Hadassah don't kill Brian don't kill your cousin because it's bad to kill your cousin we don't tell our kids that our kids know you shouldn't kill it's something God put in us that's truth truth is something that is established and doesn't change and God makes sure it doesn't change it's absolute reality is affected by time it's manipulated by the agendas of man men change reality to suit their own selves to make themselves better or happier it doesn't have boundaries reality is something that we can manipulate I can make things
all about me and my reality changes because I make everybody serve me everybody kiss my ring because now I'm the king and you know my reality changes but it's kind of weird the truth is I'm not a king and probably no one's going to kiss my ring but I could make you and then that would change my reality reality is relative and finite where truth is universal and eternal reality is a truth with a small t truth with a capital t is independent of any reality truth is not dependent on realities truth will always stay the same the reality of the world a long time ago is they thought that the world was flat and if you got
in the boat and you went on the ocean and you went too far you would go and go and go and you would fall off the edge of the earth was it true no because the world is round but for them the reality is I'm not going very far in the ocean because I'll fall off but their reality didn't change the truth truth isn't dependent on realities truth encompasses all realities but it's not made up of our realities our perception of realities reality is a subjective experience that can be explained na realidade é uma experiência subjetiva que pode ser explicada I'm poor because I lost my job I'm rich because I won the mega center
our reality is always with a because why because why because why because and when we get truth God why because he's God there is no because why why does God do that why did God create the earth why is God why does God let people get sick why does God let people die in accidents why does God let little kids get cancer and die from cancer why does God let little kids be abused by bad people why does God let parents get divorced and kids grow up without a dad or a mom why and you know what God says nothing because he is the truth and he doesn't have to explain what happens the reality is that some people get sick and some
people die and the truth is that God lets it happen God
Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? Por quê? can't even be put into words. If you ask somebody, what is God like?
Oh, what is God like? And we even get stuck with the question, what is truth? We can't even hardly explain truth. When someone says, what's truth? You say, I don't... It's truth. But you can't define something with the same word. You have to define it with something else. You have to say truth is something absolute. Truth is something that's not always explainable. Truth is something obvious. Truth is something too that can't be captured with words. Truth doesn't change. Truth is fixed. It's absolute and it's eternal. But reality can. So, getting to the end... Are you understanding the difference between truth and reality?
Because in the world, it's blurred. A coisa está embassada. Truth and reality are the same thing. People don't separate truth from reality. They say, this is my reality, thus it's true. But it's not always that way. Sua realidade não é sempre a verdade. Pode ser simplesmente sua realidade percebida pelo você. Mas não faz a coisa. See, if you go out on the streets and you talk to the people that live on the streets, some of them are a little bit... They're not right in the hand. They're a little bit crazy. And if you talk to them, they're confused. Their reality... I remember when I grew up, I lived my last year of second grau
in high school. I lived in an old folks' home. You know what an old folks' home is? Eu vivi em uma casa. Minha mãe era gerente de uma casa ou diretor de uma casa de mulheres com Alzheimer's. Sabe o que é Alzheimer's, né? A pessoa esquece...
Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's. Esquece de quem é e vai regredindo na vida. And I lived. I lived there with them. I lived there. I lived there for one year. And a lot of them didn't have right perceptions of reality. One lady thought that she dated Prince Charles. O Prince B. Charles, né? Inglaterra. Ela achava que ele era un namorado dela. And that was her reality. You couldn't tell. It wasn't true. But her reality was that. And so we see even a lot of people in life. We know people in life. And when they talk about themselves, you kind of look at them and you go, you know what? I know you. That's not really true. We see people that
aren't happy. They're sad. Their life is a disaster. everything is going wrong and you ask them, how are you? And they say, I'm fine. Everything's fine. But it's not true. The reality is that something else. And they can try and convince themselves that they're happy, but they're really not. They're miserable. And some people are happy and they're just happy. You know? Anyways, Jesus died and rose from the dead. Have you heard that? Jesus died on a cross and he rose from the dead. That is an indisputable truth.
They've got proof. You can't argue that. It's a truth. Ah, but my reality, who cares what your reality is? The truth is he rose from the dead. And they have proof. People saw him. They had eyewitnesses that weren't even Christians who saw him. They said, we saw Jesus walking down the street. He rose from the dead. So, what we do with truth, what we do principally or more importantly with the truth that Jesus died and rose from the dead will determine our reality. If we embrace Jesus as our friend, as our Lord, as our Savior, as our God, our reality will change. It will change our lives completely. If we reject him,
it might not change your reality now, but it will change your reality one day when you stand before him at judgment and he's not your friend or your Savior or your Lord but he's a God who's a judge and he's going to look at you, he's going to say, you rejected the truth that I gave you and now your reality is going to change because now you're going to go to hell for eternity and that's truth and that's a bad reality. I mean, realities can change but the truth will never change. Do you understand? Yeah, it's one of those it's one of these subjects that the world is like, I don't know, they think it's really neat to talk about
how truth is subjective now and truth isn't absolute. Truth changes and truth depends on what I think and reality is the same as truth and it's depending on my opinion and it gets all messed up and so we try to talk to people they don't even understand what they're saying and a lot of times we get confused trying to talk to them so it's good that we stop and we think and we separate things we say, no, truth is absolute. If truth isn't absolute, it's not truth.
Reality is not truth, reality is different. Reality can be perceived, reality can change, truth doesn't change. So we get these things so when we start talking with people in the world we can help them to stop and see things right instead of getting all confused because the devil's confusing a lot of people today. He's making their heads all this big jumbled mess and they don't know what's right and they don't know what's wrong and they don't know what's truth and they don't know what's a lie and it's just a mess. So if we, at least here, if we can talk about this stuff and we can get our focus right and we can understand
this stuff when we go talk to them we'll have something to say and when they say what's truth we'll say I know what truth is this is truth and God is truth and the Bible is true and Jesus rose from the dead and that's true and it's all stuff that's absolute and it doesn't change. Okay? Okay, Lord we thank you God that you are the way that you are the truth and that you are the life and we thank you that you reveal to us Lord God your truth God that you change the reality of our lives you change the reality of who we are and who we've been God we pray that you continually every day reveal more truth to us about your person
about who you are about who we are Lord that we could walk more with you that we could know you better God we just thank you Lord Jesus that you're a God that's sovereign and that you're over the truth and the reality of everything in this world Lord and we just love you in Jesus name we pray Amen Amen
