I Want Revival!

Just speak these words and you can prepare yourself for the tremor that will follow as every Christian within earshot shouts an ”amen” so loud that it’s almost believable. But, with this, I have to ask, “Do you really think that we want revival, or is this just the fad of the hour, to speak of revival, to pretend that it might really be happening in some remote corner of the earth? Or is it maybe just something to excite the masses?” I have nothing against revival; on the contrary, I am totally in favor of it and pray for it everyday. But, sincerely, I doubt the sincerity of the “amen’s” that echo in the church today.

These days there are so many beautiful songs and eloquent sermons dealing with this subject and in such a way that we end up believing that we already have it, or in the least that it is something guaranteed. Even the prophets of today are speaking of this end time revival. So, I guess we can relax then, huh? Of course everyone one says “no”, but, while your butt is asleep as a result of so much time sitting on it, let me interject something. Most of us want revival if it comes for free, or at the most in a five and dime store. But, if it means that I may have to miss some of my beauty sleep or a couple of meals, you can count me out. It’s amazing how we can almost convince anyone of our sincerity and desire for revival until the point that we have to prove it through our actions. It’s at this point that we find ourselves with empty handed and with tired tongues.

If we truly want revival, let’s do something in order to see it happen. Let’s pray, let’s weep, let’s beg, let’s fast (sorry for the curse word). If you want to really bother the church today, start to speak about fasting and show them that fasting is a normal part of the Christian life and not an option. In Matthew 6:16-17, Jesus says, “When you fast”, not “if you fast”. Seems easy enough to understand doesn’t it? Jesus expects us to fast. And when we start to speak of fasting, I am not referring to the space of time between dinner and breakfast. I am speaking of 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 30 days, or even 40 days (aaahhhh, I’ll die!) without eating, just liquid. Sure it’s radical. But, how perhaps do you think that revival is going to come? During one more church party full of an exceeding amount of food while others in our city are going hungry, (but that’s another subject). My friend, we have to stop bowing our knees to the god of our stomachs. Sincerely, it’s shocking to see how much we are in submission to our stomachs. Try to skip a few meals and see if yours doesn’t start to cry out with threats of impending death. Or wait until the hour to eat and see how people react when the food isn’t ready. “I’m hungry! Where’s the food?!?” “I’m starving” “I’m dying of hunger!” (If only)

“I said bow fool!”

We live crying out, “Where’s revival? Where’s the revival that all of the preachers are speaking about? Where’s the revival that we have been waiting for?” All good questions as the majority of us are tired of hearing these empty words about some revival that doesn’t exist and apparently is not coming. So, where’s the revival? If you listen carefully enough you can hear a voice coming down from above, a response, “You ate it.”

But, to just go hungry will not change anything. We need to pray, really pray, crying out and imploring. When was the last time that you spent the night on your knees weeping in God’s presence begging for His mercy in relation to the sins of our nation and crying out for revival? That’s exactly my point. And you still want to know why we don’t see revival? The ball is on side of the court. It’s with us. God did His part. Now we have to do ours. If we want it, let’s go after it. Let’s stop shouting out the right responses to mundane questions if we are not willing to pay the price and make this dream become a reality.

Let’s stop speaking so much about revival, as though this were some way to obligate God to stand up and do something. Nothing moves God more than one of His children on their knees crying out to Him. John Wesley said, “If you want to see revival fire in the world, set yourself on fire and let them see you burn.” My friend, God is waiting for you to move and to see what burns in your heart. We need to stop saying things just because everyone says them and responding just because we know the right answer, becoming just one more wood face running the risk of seeing his nose grow. Let your actions demonstrate the sincerity of your heart. Let your actions speak louder than your words. The world doesn’t need words or more sermons they need revival. They need to experience a real God.

Revival waits for us. Let’s go after it.
